Proceeds from the event will help establish Daybreak’s Paths to Prosperity program at its RWC Center for Adolescent Recovery in Brush Prairie and outpatient facility in Vancouver. The program connects the clients at Daybreak to enrichment activities in the community so that they can develop a love for clean and sober living and are empowered to take the next steps in building futures for themselves.

“We launched the Paths to Prosperity program two years ago at our Spokane facility and since its implementation, our treatment completion rates and client satisfaction surveys have greatly improved,” said Annette Klinefelter, CEO of Daybreak Youth Services. “We can’t wait to bring this innovative program to Southwest Washington and we thank all of our generous donors, sponsors and community partners for helping to make that possible.”

To fully implement Paths to Prosperity in Brush Prairie and Vancouver, Daybreak will need to hire an activities coordinator, a recreation manager and have funding available for clients to travel to and attend events and recreational opportunities. Additional donations to the program can be made at www.daybreakyouthservices.org/giving/donate.

The Hootenanny at the Hangar was supported by the following local businesses: The Vancouver Clinic, Kaiser Permanente, The Columbian, Thompson Metal Fab, ilani and Kaufman Direct Mail.

We know that addiction and mental health treatment can be a difficult process. Hosting events like prom that are all about self-esteem building and having fun are a vital break from the work of treatment. This prom represented a typical rite of passage that Daybreak clients may otherwise not experience.

BRUSH PRAIRIE — It’s a new day for Daybreak Youth Services.

The youth treatment organization celebrated the opening of its one-of-a-kind center on Thursday afternoon — nearly two decades after coming to Clark County and moving into what was supposed to be a temporary home on Falk Road in Vancouver.

About 200 community members, elected officials and Daybreak staff and volunteers cheered the opening of the 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art RWC Center for Adolescent Recovery. The center is the first in the Northwest to offer the full continuum of treatment for adolescents, including evaluation and treatment for acute mental health issues, detox, and residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment.

The capital campaign for the project raised more than $2 million from more than 100 donors — a testament to the dedication of the community to its youth, said Daybreak CEO Annette Klinefelter.

“This facility could not be built anywhere else first,” she said.

Daybreak’s Falk Road facility houses 16 teen boys receiving residential treatment. Those clients will move into the new facility this weekend. The Brush Prairie center, at 11910 N.E. 154th St., will open its doors to new patients on June 1 and will serve boys and girls ages 12 to 18.

The new facility has 43 residential treatment beds, three detox beds and 12 mental-health evaluation and treatment beds — a service previously not available for youth in Clark County. The new facility also houses outpatient services for people living in Brush Prairie, Battle Ground and north county.

Having these services close to home is important for the success of the youth receiving treatment, said state Sen. Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver. When teens receive treatment close to home, they have the support of their friends and family, she said.

“No more sending kids to Seattle,” Wilson said. “No more denying kids help because they can’t cross state lines.”

With 42 new beds, Daybreak nearly doubles the current capacity of all youth treatment organizations in Western Washington. And while Portland organizations may have space, kids on the state Medicaid program can’t cross state lines for treatment.

That’s why it was important for the community to step up.

“I’m so proud to be in a community that comes together and says, ‘We want to do something for our kids,’” said Clark County council Chair Marc Boldt. “The kids who come out of here are going to be electeds. They’re going to be servants. They’re going to be in our community. We’re gonna see great things from the people that come out of here.”

Klinefelter said that providing the youth seeking treatment with a dignified place to heal sends an important message: “You have value.”

And others across the state are already taking notice of the work being done in Clark County, said Michael Langer, with the state Department of Social and Health Services. The state office is fielding calls from other organizations wanting to know how they can get a facility like Daybreak in their communities, he said.

“It’s chaotic,” said Alayna Becker, Daybreak spokeswoman. “Sixteen-year-old boys who are having mental health problems and all packed in here is really hard.”

Daybreak moved into the building on Falk Road in 1999. It was intended to be temporary. Now, 18 years later, the nonprofit adolescent treatment center is finally preparing to move into a permanent — and much bigger — home.

Next month, the 16 teen boys receiving residential treatment at Daybreak will move into the organization’s new Brush Prairie facility, 11910 N.E. 154th St., which once housed the Bethesda Slavic Church.

Then, on June 1, the 58-bed facility will open its doors to new patients. The facility will increase the number of residential treatment beds from 16 to 43 and add three detox beds. The new center will also bring a new service to Clark County: evaluation and treatment beds.

The 12-bed unit is where youth in crisis can receive stabilizing mental health treatment. Such services don’t currently exist in Clark County and are scarce across the state. While some Portland organizations offer youth evaluation and treatment beds, kids on the state Medicaid program can’t cross state lines for treatment, said Annette Klinefelter, Daybreak’s executive director. The closest in-state option is in the Seattle area, she said.

The Daybreak unit will be open to youth statewide, not just those in Clark County, but having the beds here will benefit local teens who need the services, Klinefelter said.

“They can get much better care in their community,” she said. “Their families can participate in their treatment, which is huge. Typically for families, they need support and tools to be able to work with their kids.”

Youth can come to the unit in a variety of ways, whether through a parent initiating an involuntary treatment hold or a transfer from an emergency department after a suicide attempt or psychosis, Klinefelter said.

The length of stay in the unit will vary. Some teens may be there on holds for 72 hours or 14 days. Others may spend months waiting for a long-term placement, Klinefelter said.

Youth who have a co-occurring substance use disorder — even those with a primary mental health diagnosis who are experimenting with drugs or alcohol — may be admitted to Daybreak’s residential treatment unit. Others may not need additional treatment and would be released after the short stay in the evaluation and treatment unit, Klinefelter said.

Spacious facility

Those who are admitted to Daybreak’s inpatient residential treatment program will receive care in a new, spacious facility. The 30,000-square-foot facility will house boys and girls, ages 12 to 18, in separate wings. They’ll have separate communal living rooms, small-group meeting rooms and classrooms and will never interact, Becker said. All doors require key cards to open.

The facility will also feature a gymnasium and fitness center — something not available in the current building — as well as a large dining hall, a laundry room, chapel and outdoor exercise space. Those areas will be used by both male and female clients but not at the same time, Becker said. In the fall, they’ll get to work on a serenity garden, she said.

Currently, the west side of the state has 58 beds for substance use disorder treatment, which includes the 16 beds at the current Daybreak facility. There are currently no treatment beds for girls in Southwest Washington.

In addition to the inpatient program, the new facility will house outpatient services for people living in Brush Prairie, Battle Ground and north county. Daybreak will still have its outpatient facility on Mill Plain Boulevard in Vancouver.

Lack of youth services

The added evaluation and treatment beds and the increased capacity for residential treatment are needed in the state, but so too are services that catch kids before they need such intensive care, said Vanessa Gaston, director of Clark County Community Services.

“Right now, there’s not enough early interventions in the community to prevent kids from escalating to the point where they need treatment,” Gaston said.

“There’s just a lack of youth services, period,” she added.

Other organizations are working to try to address those gaps, as well. Beacon Health Options, which provides crisis services for Clark County, will launch an early intervention program soon after Daybreak opens its new facility.

The organization’s youth mobile crisis services program will provide families with face-to-face interventions, said Inna Liu, Beacon program director for Southwest Washington. Beacon also received grant money for a program to intervene with teens and young adults experiencing their first episode of psychosis, she said.

The goal, Liu said, is to provide more comprehensive services for youth and families in Clark County. That’s a community effort that Daybreak has been a part of, as well.

“You can have big things happen in the community when you have everyone coming to the table,” Klinefelter said.

VANCOUVER, WA, November 17, 2016 — The Southwest Washington community stood with Daybreak Youth Services last night to raise almost $900,000 in support of the completion of Daybreak’s new, state-of-the-art treatment facility in Brush Prairie, WA.

The paddle raise took place at the Warehouse ’23 in Vancouver. Speakers advocated for comprehensive substance abuse and mental health treatment options for teens across the region. Daybreak client Mattie, 18, said, “When I started Daybreak, I didn’t care what I did. I didn’t care about anything except for that need to drink. Since coming to Daybreak, I’m surrounded by people that want to build me up.”

The Daybreak Center for Adolescent Recovery will add 58 treatment beds in Southwest Washington, doubling the current capacity of all youth treatment organizations in Western Washington. In addition to co-occurring (mental health and chemical dependency) inpatient care, the new facility will include: medically assisted detox services; outpatient psychiatric and addiction treatment; an onsite school; a serenity garden; gym and fitness center, all on eight acres of beautiful land.

The new facility will help keep $50,000,000- $90,000,000 from leaving Clark County because teens and families will no longer need to travel to other regions to receive treatment. It also brings 40 permanent, living-wage jobs to Clark County.

“This step toward our goal has given us the momentum that won’t stop. The need is great, and Daybreak is on the forefront to provide vital, lifesaving treatment for teens” said Daybreak Executive Director Annette Klinefelter. “We are so grateful and inspired by the support of our community.”

The Daybreak Center for Adolescent Recovery is projected to open early 2017.

About Daybreak:

As an innovative leader in drug and alcohol youth treatment since 1978, Daybreak Youth Services helps families who are struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. We provide inpatient and outpatient treatment programs to families across the Northwest, including Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Alaska.

We operate a 40-bed, girls-only inpatient facility in Spokane, Wash., and a 16-bed, boys-only inpatient facility in Vancouver, Wash. These facilities provide safe and secure environments where adolescents ages 12-17 can commit to their recovery while engaging in school and recreation.

Our inpatient chemical dependency treatment programs are certified by the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse. Our programs adhere to industry best practices and meet
