Following the death of 17-year-old Spokane Mead High School student, Michael Garrison, passing away from an apparent drug overdose, KHQ interviewed Daybreak’s Director of External Relations, Sarah Spier, and Daybreak’s Marketing and Development Coordinator, Aislinn Lautenbach to hear more about what Daybreak is seeing in the Spokane Community. The Daybreak employees shared how to help youth and families stay safe from the devastating effects of opioids. CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL KHQ STORY.

“It’s extremely easy. It’s frightening how easy it is for youth to get access to drugs,” Daybreak Youth Services Director of External Relations Sarah Spier told me on Thursday.

Sarah and Daybreak’s Marketing & Development Coordinator Aislinn Lautenbach see first hand every day the grip that addiction has on teenagers in our community. Most of the patients at Daybreak aren’t there for opioid abuse, but staff are seeing a scary trend in the progression that is addiction.

“Most people don’t start off with a needle in their arm. They start out abusing alcohol or marijuana and then it escalates into abusing harder drugs,” Spier said.

Sarah knows the cycle all too well. She is 10 years in recovery from an opioid addiction and now dedicates her life to prevention and intervention when a teen might be struggling like she was.

The most recent numbers from the Spokane County Regional Health District show that about one in twenty high school students in Spokane County used an opioid medication to get high. Daybreak’s outpatient facility in Spokane Valley has seen an increase in heroin and opioid use in young men between 15 and 18-years-old in the last month. Michael Garrison was 17.

Where are youth getting the drugs?

Sarah and Aislinn said a lot of youth will actually get prescription pills from family and a lot of time the family is unaware.

Prevention of teen drug abuse can start in the home. Just like firearms, removing access to prescription pills can be the first step.

“Even if you don’t have something in your home, if your child is going to a friend’s house, they might have something and that’s one of the easiest ways to get access to something is through parents or grandparents or friend’s parents and it’s not intentional,” Spier said. “But that’s how kids get a hold of them and then they sell them and the first place they bring them to sell is school. That’s where they sell the drugs.”

“It starts in the home. Be mindful of what you’re doing around your children. Be mindful of the peers they’re hanging out with,” Lautenbach added. “If you see something say something. Lock up your meds.”

We were all kids once and know first-hand how good they can be at hiding things from parents, but hiding things from friends might not be as easy, which is why Spier and Lautenbach urge friends to speak up if they see something suspicious.

“When you’re young, it’s so hard because you don’t want to get your friend in trouble, but you literally will save their life. You need to tell a teacher, an adult, the parents if they’re involved,” Spier said. “If you don’t you literally risk killing your friend.”

Spier’s experience with drug addiction led her to Daybreak to help youths in trouble, but it also afforded her the opportunity to co-found the Spokane Regional Opioid Task Force, an organization that aims to educate the public about drug addiction. On their website, you can find information about getting help or helping someone who needs it.

Proceeds from the event will help establish Daybreak’s Paths to Prosperity program at its RWC Center for Adolescent Recovery in Brush Prairie and outpatient facility in Vancouver. The program connects the clients at Daybreak to enrichment activities in the community so that they can develop a love for clean and sober living and are empowered to take the next steps in building futures for themselves.

“We launched the Paths to Prosperity program two years ago at our Spokane facility and since its implementation, our treatment completion rates and client satisfaction surveys have greatly improved,” said Annette Klinefelter, CEO of Daybreak Youth Services. “We can’t wait to bring this innovative program to Southwest Washington and we thank all of our generous donors, sponsors and community partners for helping to make that possible.”

To fully implement Paths to Prosperity in Brush Prairie and Vancouver, Daybreak will need to hire an activities coordinator, a recreation manager and have funding available for clients to travel to and attend events and recreational opportunities. Additional donations to the program can be made at www.daybreakyouthservices.org/giving/donate.

The Hootenanny at the Hangar was supported by the following local businesses: The Vancouver Clinic, Kaiser Permanente, The Columbian, Thompson Metal Fab, ilani and Kaufman Direct Mail.

Event festivities included line dancing, chicken “drop” bingo, hot potato, a dessert dash, paddle raise and auction. A total of $84,324 was raised. These funds will help establish Daybreak’s Paths to Prosperity program at the RWC Center for Adolescent Recovery in Brush Prairie and outpatient facility in Vancouver.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Daybreak Youth Services is excited to announce it has received more than $125,000 in funds from Molina Healthcare of Washington and Community Health Plan of Washington (CHPW) to cover start-up operational costs for its new Psychiatric Evaluation and Treatment (E&T) unit in Brush Prairie.

Daybreak, a 501c3 nonprofit, addressed a significant service gap for youth in crisis in Southwest Washington with the opening of its 12-bed Psychiatric E&T unit at the RWC Center for Adolescent Recovery (11910 NE 154th St., Brush Prairie, WA). The service aims to improve access for teens in crisis while also providing a more cost-effective setting by diverting from higher-cost inpatient facilities.

The combination of Psychiatric E&T services with Daybreak’s existing Substance Use Disorder treatment programming is unique in Washington state and promises to further improve service, quality and cost by enabling more timely transitions of patients to the most appropriate care setting.

“We are thrilled to invest in this innovative solution that will improve service and access to our members in Southwest Washington, and provide a much-needed option to transition members out of inpatient facilities,” said Peter Adler, president of Molina Healthcare of Washington. “The Daybreak facility gets us one step closer to whole person care, reducing costs while also improving member care.”

“Providing care services in a setting that is appropriate to the member’s needs is integral to patient-centered whole person care, and the Daybreak facility does just that,” said Leanne Berge, CEO of Community Health Plan of Washington. “We are very pleased to be able to contribute to a solution that addresses such a critical need for our youth members in Southwest Washington.”

“Kids across the state are struggling more than ever with a variety of acute mental health needs, but a lack of Psychiatric Evaluation and Treatment services for adolescents has made it tougher for those in need to get the help,” said Annette Klinefelter, Daybreak CEO. “Thanks to this collaborative investment by Molina Healthcare and Community Health Plan of Washington, kids in crisis from can come to Daybreak for stabilization and transition into a continuum of care closer to home.”

Molina and CHPW serve Medicaid beneficiaries in Southwest Washington’s Apple Health integrated managed care program.

About Daybreak Youth Services

As an innovative leader in youth substance use disorder and mental health treatment since 1978, Daybreak Youth Services helps families who are struggling with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and mental health issues. Daybreak offers outpatient counseling to teens in Spokane, Vancouver and Brush Prairie, WA. For teens with more acute support needs, Daybreak offers residential inpatient SUD and Psychiatric Evaluation & Treatment services in Brush Prairie (all genders identities/expressions) and Spokane (female and female-identifying only).

Daybreak Youth Services has broadened its focus beyond inpatient and outpatient treatment for substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health issues to include the treatment of acute mental health conditions.

On Tuesday, November 21, 13 beds at Daybreak’s girls-only inpatient facility in Spokane were dedicated to Psychiatric Evaluation and Treatment (E&T), providing services for acute mental health conditions including suicide ideation, major depression, psychosis, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. E&T services may also cover detox management when mental health concerns are present. This expansion of services comes just a few weeks after Daybreak opened 12 Psychiatric E&T beds at its Brush Prairie facility (located near Vancouver, WA), which serves both genders.

“Kids across the state are struggling more than ever with a variety of acute mental health needs, but long wait times at hospitals and travel pose barriers to kids getting the help they need,” said Annette Klinefelter, Daybreak CEO. “Because of these Evaluation and Treatment beds, kids will be able to get the help they need to stabilize and move on to less restrictive treatment right here in their community.”

Whenever behavioral health services aren’t available locally, patients are placed in facilities outside of the region or often won’t receive treatment at all. Daybreak is working with school counselors and hospitals from the area to ensure this new resource is properly utilized.

Non-medical providers looking to admit a patient (12-18 years old) to E&T are asked to contact their local County Crisis Line. In Spokane County, that number is 509-838-4428.

Tour Daybreak’s new Brush Prairie facility for Give More 24!

In honor of Give More 24!, Southwest Washington’s largest day of giving on Thursday, September 21, Daybreak Youth Services, the leading nonprofit provider of adolescent substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health treatment, will be hosting public client-led tours of its new state-of-the-art RWC Center for Adolescent Recovery in Brush Prairie. Daybreak provides the best possible care to kids every day, but sometimes client treatment stays are cut short due to financial restrictions. Daybreak wants their community to know “The difference a day makes” at Daybreak.

Tours of the RWC Center for Adolescent Recovery (11910 NE 154th St., Brush Prairie, WA) will take place on September 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Each tour includes lunch and a tour with a Daybreak client. Additional time slots may be added as needed.

Daybreak’s new 31,000-square-foot facility opened last May thanks in large part to generous support from the Clark County community. The state-of-the-art facility is the first of its kind in Washington offering: classrooms, a gym/fitness center, gender-specific residential inpatient rooms for all genders, outpatient counseling, a chapel, offices all on nine beautiful rural acres in Brush Prairie, WA. This is the first time treatment for adolescent females is available in Southwest Washington.

In total, the new facility features 43 residential treatment beds, three detox beds and 12 acute mental health evaluation and treatment (E&T) beds.

“Daybreak built the RWC Center with the needs of kids in Southwest Washington in mind. We created a beautiful space for healing and growth for all kids that need help. Unfortunately, some kids are limited in the time their insurance will allow them to spend at Daybreak. We need our community’s help to ensure every kid receives the treatment they need, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Annette Klinefelter, CEO of Daybreak.

Launched by the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington in 2014, Give More 24! is a 24-hour online fundraising event and Southwest Washington’s largest day of giving. On September 21, Daybreak will be raising money for its scholarship fund, which allows all kids to receive the treatment they need, regardless of their ability to pay.

Individuals interested in touring the new facility are asked to please reserve a time slot by contacting Tina Diluzio, Daybreak Youth Services development manager, at (360) 635-4120 ext 5005 or tdiluzo@daybreakyouthservices.org.
